For my Fall 2023 co-op I worked as a R&D Product Development Engineer at MilliporeSigma, focusing on their bioreactors.

My main task for this co-op was to design a cooling solution for a bioreactor. This involved working with engineers to determine technical requirements to ensure the biology portions functioned optimally. I also worked with the industrial design team to generate broad concepts and create CAD models to enable VR usability assessments.

I used excel to perform a variety of heat transfer related calculations including:

  • Heat load estimation from conduction and internal heat generation

  • Peltier module selection and current/voltage setpoint calculation

  • Heatsink airflow requirements to optimize maximize cooling and noise

  • Fan curve analysis to select appropriate models

I also met with external vendors to gain practical advice and recommendations for industry-specific products. I designed control electronics for prototype systems and ran tests to ensure stability over a range of operating conditions.

At the end of my co-op I helped prepare documentation for a preliminary patent application related to the work I did.
